TVET enrolment jumps 42% as skills training goes mainstream

Enrolment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training rose from 340,131 in 2022 to 484,333 — a deliberate national pivot from paper qualifications to employable skills.

Kenya has produced degree holders who cannot find work while employers cannot find welders, plumbers, machinists or technicians. The administration attacked that mismatch head-on.

  • TVET enrolment grew 42%, from 340,131 (2022) to 484,333 (2025).
  • Capitation was extended to TVET trainees so the cost per trainee to the household fell sharply.
  • New and upgraded technical training institutes were rolled out at constituency level.
  • 213 Jua Kali artisans received formal recognition of prior learning — certifying skills people already had but could never prove on paper.

A certified artisan can price their work, win a tender, get a loan and go abroad. An uncertified one cannot.
